ในป่าแห่งหนึ่ง กระต่ายตัวหนึ่งชอบอวดโอ้ตัวเองว่าวิ่งเร็วกว่าใครๆ ในป่า เมื่อมันเห็นเต่าเดินช้าต้วมเตี้ยมผ่านมามันจึงหัวเราะเยาะเย้ยเจ้าเต่า เต่ารู้สึกไม่พอใจจึงท้ากระต่ายให้มาวิ่งแข่งกัน เมื่อการแข่งขันเริ่มขึ้น กระต่ายก็ว่งนำหน้าเจ้าเต่าไปไกล แต่พอถึงครึ่งทางกระต่ายกลับชะล่าใจแวะนอนพักใต้ต้นไม้ใหญ่และเพลอหลับไปนานมาก ขณะที่เจ้าเต่าค่อยๆ เดินไปเรื่อยๆ โดยไม่ได้หยุดพักเลย เมื่อกระต่ายตื่นขึ้นมาก็ตกใจรีบวิ่งไปที่เส้นชัย แต่ก็สายเกินไปเพราะเจ้าเต่าเป็นผู้ชนะ ยืนรออยู่ที่เส้นชัยแล้ว
